More and more lighting today is being converted to LED. Not only are LED lights more cost efficient, but they are better for the environment. In an ever-conscious world people are choosing “green’ options, and projects that will protect our ecosystems. There are many reasons why people are switching to LED, and airports are noticing the benefits in switching to LED for runway lighting.

The average incandescent light lasts an average of 1,500 hours, and runway lights are used almost 24 hours a day. Using incandescent lights for a runway means a lot of time needs to be set aside for maintenance of changing bulbs. LED lamps last 10 to 15 times longer than incandescent reducing the amount of time spent on maintenance. With the reduction in need of maintenance personnel, safety will increase because there are less people needed on the active runways.

While LED bulbs cost more upfront, there is replacement costs associated. Since LED lamps last a lot longer there is not as much of a need for replacement parts. LED lamps use up to 90% less energy than other lighting sources, saving money in the long run. This is also a more environmentally friendly choice. LEDs can be recycled, whereas other lighting sources contain mercury and must be disposed of in a certain way. LED lights provide a brighter and crisper color than incandescent which is beneficial for pilots upon take-off and landing.
