Metal spinning is used to form many complex shapes.

Here at Reflective Concepts Inc., our top priority is the satisfaction of our customers. We work hard so they don't have to. Part of our approach to new and existing customers is ascertaining their unique needs so we can meet them as quickly and efficiently as possible, without sacrificing quality. With such a diverse skill set, RCI is equipped to handle almost any job we come across. Did you know that RCI not only provides fabricated tailored reflectors, but also metal spinnings?

Are you working on a metal spinning project that is low volume and needs a fast turnaround? Looking for a one stop shop that can provide your secondary metal spinning operations? Have a metal spinning project you need to move from overseas and don't have a domestic source? At RCI, we are equipped to produce your metal spinning, from low to high volume production, with fast turnaround and at a highly competitive price.

What is metal spinning?

Metal spinning, also known as metal forming is a "cold worked" metal forming process in which sheet metal is formed over a rotating mandrel or form. The metal is formed into seamless axisymmetric shapes by a combination of rotational motion and force. In this process a tube or a disc of metal is rotated at a high speed, and is then transformed into the desired axially symmetrical object. This process of metal spinning uses conceptually has similar techniques to clay pottery sculpting and can be performed using CNC, hydraulic power or by hand.

Metal spinning can be performed manually by hand or with a CNC machine. The CNC allows control and automates the metal spinning process by programming the turning machine's operations into a computer program.

The dawning of the digital age in manufacturing has advanced metal spinning in a way that now makes it cost effective for both prototyping and volume production. CNC spin forming machines turn out pieces at tolerances which exceed even the most skilled manual processes.

What can be produced with metal spinning?

Due to the nature of the process, most metal spinnings are round. This has many commercial applications such as creating decorative and architectural parts.

Metal forming can be performed on any ductile metal. The diameter and depth of this spun metal can be of various sizes.

The advantages include the ability to create objects seamlessly by using a single piece of material and low cost tooling in respect to other forming methods.

What shapes can be produced?

  • conical- cone shaped
  • parabolic- bell shaped/ dished
  • toroidal- donut shaped
  • hemispherical- half of a sphere
  • venturi- hourglass shaped
  • cylindrical and lid shapes
